Marinating in God
I believe that the divine is not separate from creation, looking down on us from the outside, immutable and incomparable. Rather, I see divinity wherever I look. The Hebrew prophets speak of mountains that leap like lambs, of trees clapping in exultation, of moon and stars glad to do the bidding of their maker. Like those Biblical visions, I too see creation everywhere and ongoing, permeated with the creator whose engagement is continuous, everywhere, and wondrous. We - like the rest of creation - are marinating in the divine, and we - like our brother and sister creatures - are momentary expressions of a creativity that links us in relationship without end: each to each, each to all, each and all to the One.
Somewhere in the universe there is a spirit of creative transformation - beckoning atoms to form molecules, stars to congregate as galaxies, solar systems to emerge from stars, life to come the oceans, animals to form societies, living beings to form bonded relationships, sages to stand up for justice and love. This spirit cannot be confined to a single name or idea: Life or the Tao or Love. It always escapes the names by which it is named and we find ourselves developing metaphors to evoke an awareness of it. God is one metaphor.
The healing spirit is inside each person -- beckoning them to turn the pain we carry inside of us into strengths, flipping the negative lifestyles into positive ones. Sometimes this spirit works through institutions; Homeboy Industries is one of them.
